Instagram has started rolling out its newest feature, Reels, in India. Even if you don’t have it already, you will see Reels popping up on your timeline, or at least in the Explore tab. Here’s how to make your first Instagram Reel. But before that….
What is Instagram Reels?
Reels allows users to create 15-second videos with Instagram’s filters and popular songs. It allows users to reach a larger audience as they can share the clips in Explore so it’s visible to a lot more people than just their followers. They can also share a Reel as a video clip beyond the platform.
How to make an Instagram Reels video
Open the Instagram camera, which now has the Reels option along with Boomerang, Layout and among others.
Instagram Reels is available in the camera feature. It lets you share your clip on Explore.
Reels has options like audio from Instagram’s Music Library, speed, effects and a timer. In the audio option, you can pick a song with Instagram’s library or record your own with the “use audio” option. You can choose from over a thousand AR effects from Instagram’s catalogue and use the timer option to record a video hands-free. Once done, the speed feature lets you speed up or slow down part of the video or audio.
You can record a new Reel or pick a video from your own phone gallery.
You can record multiple 15-second Reels at a time and add different effects to each.
With the align feature, line line up objects from your previous clip before recording your next, which helps for seamless transitions like outfit changes or adding new friends into your reel.
Review your Reel and see how they look stitched together. You can delete and re-record your Reels if needed.
Instagram Reels lets you change the speed of the video and record with a timer.
Once done, you can choose the audience you want to the 15-second clip with. Unlike Instagram Stories, which is restricted to your followers, you can share your Reels in the Explore section for everyone on the platform to view it.
The Reels you share will be featured in a separate tab on your profile like the one for photos in which you’re tagged. IGTV has moved to the Explore page.
Reels now takes up more than half the Explore tab, giving great visibility for those who get featured
Instagram Reels is great for exposure.
If you share your Reels to your Stories or in Direct, they will disappear after 24 hours. You can also save Reels to your drafts for later.
Tips from Instagram on using Reels
When you share Reels featuring certain songs, hashtags or effects, your video may also appear on dedicated pages whenever someone clicks on that song, hashtag or effect.
Reels are meant to be funny, creative, real and most importantly, fun. An ideal Reel would be a 15-second video that:
- ‘Makes my day’ – Clips that are surprising, make people laugh out loud and timely
- ‘Makes me want to’ – Watch the clip again, share it and create a new Reel
- The content must be relatable, culturally relevant, inspiring and responsible
Note: If you wish to reach a wider audience through Reels, you must have a public account. If you have a private account, you can share your Reels to your Feed, Stories or in Direct so your followers can see them. But they will disappear after 24 hours.
If you can’t already see Reels on your Instagram, chances are you will be able to by the end of the day. Make sure your app is updated to the latest version.
